Super hair removal is a new technology sweeping the permanent hair removal industry integrating light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (LASER) and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) techniques. Super hair removal is better suited to large hair removal areas such as the legs, underarms and back. In cases where super hair removal is not suitable, IPL hair removal techniques will be used.
Superior results are achieved with 6 – 8 treatments, 4 – 6 weeks apart depending on the individual. The treatment is not 100% hair removal and maintenance treatments may be required yearly or twice yearly depending on the individual.
Hair removal through light therapy works by heating the hair follicle using the melanin present within the hair as a target (typically called a chromophores). The light converts to heat typically 45 – 72oC which damages the target cells halting hair production whilst leaving the surrounding skin tissue unaffected.
Super Hair removal uses a technique that exposes the hair follicle to intense light for a long duration at a slower rate. This means that the treatment is significantly more comfortable than traditional hair removal methods and the skin is better protected. Super Hair Removal is often described as warm, and occasional snaps may be felt in areas with higher hair density.
When the IPL technique is employed a sensation often described like the hot snapping of a rubber band may be experienced. The technique does not require local anesthetic and is well tolerated by most clients. Oral or topical pain medication is also not required for treatment.
Sun exposure in treatment areas is not recommended 4 – 6 weeks prior to the treatment without adequate sun protection. Waxing or plucking of the treatment area should also not be performed 4 – 6 weeks prior to treatment. Treatment areas will need to be shaved before the appointment. For your appointment wear loose comfortable clothing and bring along your iPod for longer appointment times!
There is no down time after the treatment; however, slight swelling or erythema (redness) in the treatment area may be experienced post treatment. To soothe any irritations a post laser lotion is advised for use as well as a cold compress or cool pack. The area must not be exposed to sun without clothing or adequate sun protection for 4 – 6 weeks. Some crusts or skin pigmentation may occur in the treatment area, do not scratch or pick at these areas.
Hot showers (tepid only) are not advised post treatment for 24 hours. Do not do heavy or sweaty exercise post treatment for 24 hours. Purging of the hair will occur approximately 1-2 weeks post treatment in which dead hair will rise to the surface of the follicle, remove this hair by exfoliation with the use of a loofah or damp cloth.
We advise the use of Actinica 50+ to use pre and post treatment, a liposomal sunscreen.
