WHAT IS VITAMIN C AND HOW DO YOU USE IT?

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants you can have in your skincare arsenal. When added to your daily routine, it provides a range of benefits, from brightening dull skin to targeting the effects of pollution and sun damage, fading pigmentation, increase of collagen production, leading to visible wrinkle reduction and improving skin tone. Here’s everything you need to know.

WHAT IS VITAMIN C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it cannot be stored in the body, the skin is the last organ in line to receive vitamin c when taken internally, so must be added in topical skin care products. It’s particularly effective because it can penetrate deep into the layers of skin. There are many different types of vitamin C, and it is available in many different strengths and concentrations – there are several forms of vitamin C, below are most commonly use forms:

L- Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C – ascorbic acid) – can be unstable, when mixed with water, exposed to light and/ or air, can degrade quickly. Must be formulated to 10% concentration and at a ph. of below 3.5 to be effective. Otherwise, can be irritating to the skin.

Ascorbyl glucoside-Time releasing version of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and therefore is more than traditional ascorbic acid. Lightening properties, promotes collagen synthesis its an all-round winner! Found in our energy C intensive serum by mesoestetic.

Ethyl Ascorbic acid – very stable and easily absorbed in both water and oil, brightening and antioxidant effect. Found in our Tebiskin cytoceutical skincare range.

BV-OSC (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate) – Superior ingredient, concentrated form of the component of vitamin C that promotes collagen synthesis. Excellent stability and full of antioxidants. Found in our Dermaquest C3 Serum.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When our skin is exposed to certain environmental aggressors like pollution and UV rays, it generates free radicals. These are harmful molecules which attack cells and cause damage. Most commonly they disrupt the skin’s ability to repair itself and speed up the appearance of skin aging. Antioxidants like vitamin C help by stabilizing the free radicals to prevent cell damage and restore health and balance to already damaged cells. Vitamin C also accelerates the production of collagen and elastin which are responsible for keeping skin firm and plump, so the ingredient can help prevent skin from appearing thin and papery. Another benefit of vitamin C is its ability to inhibit skin’s melanin production, which is what causes dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

WHY SHOULD I USE IT?

As well as smoothing and plumping fine lines and loose skin (by increasing collagen production), vitamin C is an ideal treatment for those who experience breakouts, scarring, pigmentation, and textured skin. It can visibly improve the appearance of pigmentation caused by sun damage and spots. Overall, it helps skin to look smoother, brighter, and healthier. You may be able to spot a difference in one use, but a long-term improvement will take place with weeks of consistent use.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?

To target the effects of UV damage and environmental aggressors, it’s recommended to use vitamin C in your morning routine – it’s the perfect partner to your SPF.

After washing your face/skin apply serums, this serum is applied under a moisturizer/sun protection.
